Window Treatments!!

There are so many options when it comes to window treatment; it can be overwhelming! There are many things to consider, functionality, aesthetics, and design.

Well, I am here to help you understand the different types of window treatments that are available. Some you may know, others you may not.

Let’s get started.

1. Hard Window Treatments– These are shutters, that can be louvered or fixed slats. It is made of either wood or plastic. They offer privacy and control the amount of light being filtered.

2. Woven Shades – Sometimes called bamboo shades. Great way to add texture to any space. They can also have an exotic surface like reeds, grasses, and wood.
3. Cellular Shades – Look like honeycombs. They are energy efficient and help insulate your home. They can be light filtering or room blackout. They are made of cloth-like materials. They can come in a single, double, or triple honeycomb.
4. Pleated Shades– Similar to cellular shades, but no honeycomb. They pull up to sit flat at the top of the window. They are thereby giving you an unobstructed view of the outdoors.
5. Venetian Blinds– They can be made from wood, metal, or plastic (not my favorite as they can break easily). The slats rotate, so they overlap, blocking the light from coming in. Slats can also come in many different widths, from micromini to 2 1/2 ” slats.
6. Shoji Pane Screens– Originate in Japan, they are made from translucent rice paper. Easily allows light into the room, so not great for bedrooms. But they do offer an exotic look to any living room or dining area. They are made out of wood or bamboo.
7. Panel Tracks – Often referred to as sliding window panels. They are great for patio doors or picture windows. Come in many different shades of colors and widths.

8. Vertical Blinds – They can be custom made. Come in fabric, plastic, metal or faux wood. They were very popular during the ’90s not so much today.
9. Roller Shades– They are called roller shade merely because they roll up!! You may remember them from your grandmother’s house, but I can assure you, they are not the same. They come in many colors, texture, and features — a simple and elegant way to treat a window.
10. Roman Shades – Fabric that hangs flat when closed. They fold into pleats when raised. Come in many different styles, fabrics, and offer insulating features — a beautiful way to add fabric into space without the cumbersome bulk of drapery.
11. Silhouettes– The vanes appear to float between two sheer panels to create shading. When blades are opened, they provide sheer light diffusion. When closed they offer privacy.

12. Drapery – Also known as curtains. They come in a variety of shapes, materials, colors, patterns, and sizes. They are the most versatile and most likely the least expensive window treatment.

13. Sheer – Made from translucent fabric. They don’t offer much privacy, but it does prevent people from looking directly into your space. Comes in many different colors and textures.
14. Cafe Curtains – They may cover the lower portion of the window or the upper part of the window. Sometimes they can do both. It allows light to filter in a while keeping the room private.
15. Austrian Shades– Fabric that is gathered into scallops when down and pulls into tighter scallops when pulled up. Fabric can be sheer. I do not like these as they are very “heavy.” Honestly, they remind me of Dracula’s coffin!! No thanks!!
16. Swag – Material that swags across the pole. Can be free-form or custom made. They were very popular in the ’90s. I still see them in homes today, but they are outdated in my opinion.

Coffee Tables

Coffee Tables

Have you ever gone shopping for coffee tables? The sheer volume only sends most people running. It’s impressive, to say the least. There are many purposes and functions to coffee table; they are not merely decorative.

They are many different types, styles, and materials. Each one is unique. Not all will work in your space. This may help alleviate the confusion.

Types of tables:

1. Coffee Table – Used in living rooms and placed in front of the sofa. Great for putting food, drinks or displaying decorative objects.

2. Accent Table – This covers a variety of tables. The most important thing to remember is they are small and can be placed anywhere.

4. Console Table – Also known as sofa tables. They are long, thin, narrow and fit nicely behind the sofa. They are also used for TV placement.

5. Side Table – Fits beside a sofa. Great for lamps or drinks. Sometimes called an end table.

6. C-Table– They are unique C-shaped. This allows them to go over beds or sofa. They can hold your drinks or laptop.

7. Nesting Tables – Sometimes called bunching tables. They are two or more tables that fit together. This is a great option when space is limited.

8. Drum Table – They were created in the 1700s. Most often called round table. They can come in many different finishes and heights.

9. Ottoman – This is a very versatile table as it can double as a table. Comes in many different shapes, sizes and some come with storage. Ideal for families.

Styles of Tables:

1. Shabby Chic– Also known as cottage table. Usually, whitewashed or painted. Can be distressed, real country look. 

2. Shaker – This simply style table works in just about in any room. It has straight legs and simple lines. Minimalist in its design since there are no carvings or inlays. They can come with drawers.

3. Mid-Century– Created in the 1950s – 1060s they are characterized by their clean, simple lines. Extremely popular in today’s designs. Works well with may design styles.

4. Parson– Modern table with four flush equal, square legs that are equally as thick as the top. The table can rectangular or square. 

5. Modern – This furniture was produced in the 20th century. Simple, clean lines, clean shapes.
6. Contemporary– Very similar to modern, the difference? Contemporary refers to what is popular in today market.

7. Rustic– Countryside, old fashion best describes this style of table. Most of the time the material is wood, it may have metal.

8. Coastal – Made famous by coastal living. These pieces are light in color. They tend to be wood and have natural shapes — a casual and organic feel to them.

9. Industrial – They tend to have the look and feel of factory tools. They utilize metal and wood. More of a rough-hewn construction. Very appealing in many designs.

10. Vintage– From the days-gone-by. But they can also be quirky in design. Think flea make finds.

11. Folding Table– Great for saving spaces. They are flexible, portable and convenient. 

Materials Styles:

1. Wood – There are many different varieties of grains and color. By far the most popular material. But wood is susceptible to water, so you must be careful.

2. Metal – Easy-to-clean, durable and very popular in design. Usually complemented with glass, wood, or stone.

3. Glass– This style can be traditional or modern. Keep in mind rings and spills will be visible on the glass. Needs to be cleaned often, may not be sensible with young children.

4. Stone – Slate, stone, marble, to name a few. There will be upkeep to this as the stone will need to be sealed.

5. Acrylic – Has the look of glass but allows for versatility. It can be shaped into any form. Much safer than glass. It was once popular in the ’50s and is now making a huge comeback. Tends to lend it’s self to a more contemporary design.

6. Upholstered– If you want a cushy place to rest your feet, then look no further. These tables can be covered in fabric, faux leather or genuine leather. They can also have storage. 

The last thing you should know before choosing your table is the height and width. The height of the table should be anywhere from 1″-3″ below the sofa. The optimal height for the coffee table should 18″ -20″.  Keep a minimum of 15″ between coffee table and sofa. That’s it!!

How to install pendants

How to install pendants!

Pendant lighting is trending these days. It serves a dual purpose, offering light in a much-needed area, and changing the design look of the space. Pendant lights come in all sort of colors, finishes, styles, and lengths.

As an Interior Decorator, I often get asked these two questions; how many will I need? And how big should they be? Good questions!! As with anything in design, there are guidelines. 

1. How big requires a little bit of math:
Generally speaking, you want 12″-16″ from the end of the island. The most common is 12″. Let’s say you have a kitchen island that is 120,” and you want four lights. With four pendants, you will have five open spaces, one on each end, and 3 in the middle (one between each pendant). Using 12″ x 5 (open spaces) = 60″.  Subtract that from 120,” and you are left with 60″. Divide 60″ by the number of pendants (4 pendants), and you are left with 15″. This will be the diameter for your fixture. Can you figure out what the diameter would be if you were using three pendants? (Hint 24″)

                    

2. How many?
The Rule of 3. In the design world, odd numbers seem to work the best. That being said, rules are made to be broken. In the example I gave above, I use four pendants. Why? Because the island is very long and can handle four pendants. Just keep this in mind, if you’re going with less, use slightly larger pendants. If you’re using more, use slightly smaller pendants. Above all, scale matters!!

3. Last but not least what height should I hang my pendants? They should hang 36″ to 48″ from the top of the counter. Be considerate of sight lines. You don’t want the pendant to obstruct anyone views, nor do you want them to hit their heads!!

New Products for 2019

New Products for 2019!

Since we are starting a new year, I thought it would be a nice idea to talk about some of these products you may not be aware.

Some of these products I have personally used and some I have not. All are products that can enhance your designs

1. Decorative Film– I love this product. These are films that can be applied over any glass door/window. Think of the possibilities. They offer privacy and decorative ideas. They are removable and reusable. Come in an array of colors and style to suit anyone taste.

2. Peelable Wallpaper – One of my favorite product. The use of this product is endless. You can use this on bookcases, furniture, lampshade, walls, ceilings….. see where I’m going with this? The best part, it’s reusable. Great for people who are renting. Very easy to install and remove.

3. Liquid Stainless Steel Paint –Do you want a stainless steel appliance but don’t like the cost? Then paint it — yup you heard right. This paint has stainless steel in the product. It’s even magnetized. You simply use it just like paint. How cool is that? I haven’t used this product yet, but I love the idea. It’s even available in HomeDepot

4. Soft Metal Film– If your appliances are still working but need a facelift, then this could be the answer. Same concept as liquid paint but this product you simply peel and stick. A little easier to use. Can withstand temperatures from 55 degrees to 122 degrees. I had used this product in my old home when I was getting ready to put it on the market. Held up great for two years and counting.

I hope you liked the products I chose. There are many more in the market and many more that come out each year. The trick is to be informed. Of course, you can always hire a designer. This way you get the added benefit of what’s trending out there.

Decorating for the holidays!

Decorating for the Holidays!!

As the holiday approaches, we get busy decorating. Many of us decorate with the traditional color theme of Red and Green.

But I’m here to tell you; you can decorate with any color you like!! The real trick to decorating is layering your vignettes. This is what will give your decor that professional design look. Layering gives warmth and dimension.

First, decide what items you want to put in that space. Then start layering. I start my base with silver leaves, then add pinecones, pine branches, and finally flowers.


I use different textures, and I love to add height. In this case, I used a book.
Creating odd numbers of vignettes works best.

Decorating for the Holidays takes a lot of time and work. But the finished product is a “Winter Wonderland” I’m proud to call home.

Wall Treatments

Wall Treatments!
Your walls are a blank canvas. It is the perfect way to show your creativity. They can dramatically transform a space.

So what are YOU  doing to reinvent your walls? Here are just some ideas that you can implement into your space.

Wood Paneling – Adds warmth. Can be traditional or contemporary.

Painting – The least inexpensive way to reinvent your space. You can also change the look whenever you want.
Architectural Digest
Wallpaper – Comes in many styles, from geometrics, florals to two dimensional, and even wallpaper that is paintable!
Chalkboard – Can make a statement! They are great for kids rooms, craft rooms, basements, and even kitchens.
Peg Board – Comes in sheets and can be cut down. They can even be painted! Great for organizing.
Wood Pallet – These pallets seem all the rage these days. They are basically free. But make sure you check the warnings on the bottom of the crate. Some give off toxic fumes. But most are safe!!
Bricks –  They have been around a long time. But it has recently made a comeback. They can be painted, distressed, or left in its natural state.
Stone – Bringing the outside in. Stones come in many textures, styles, and colors. They come in panels and you can adhere them to the walls.
Faceted or Modular – 3-dimensional sculpted surfaces. They interlock and are made from natural gypsum components. They definitely add a unique look to any space.
Wood Bocks – Again, it’s the ability to bring nature indoors. We love the organic feel to nature. It’s calming and peaceful.
Wainscoting – There are many different variations.  They come in different heights, styles, and forms.

As you can see there are many options. Many more that I did not include in this post. You can feature wall treatments over a fireplaceor use as an accent wall.

Types of ceilings

Types of Ceiling!!

Did you know there are many types of ceilings? Some you may know, others may not be familiar to you. Either way, you have a choice. Every kind of ceiling will give your space a unique look. Each ceiling offers different characteristics.

Here are some just some of the ceiling to chose from:

Exposed Beam Ceiling– This style gives the space a more rustic feel. It can also be exposed to metal beams. 
Tray Ceilings– Cut-out design. The mid-way of the ceiling is cut out. There can be lights around the perimeter, or in the center, or both!!
Vaulted/Shed/Cathedral Ceiling – They are all very similar. They form the shape of the roof. Sometimes the ceiling can be slanted, as opposed to meeting in the center of the room.


Coffered Ceilings– Repeat sunken square or rectangular pattern. This is one of my favorite type of ceiling.
Domed Ceiling– Mimics circular dome. Usually found in high-end homes. Can be very expensive to build.
Suspended Ceiling –  Used mostly in commercial buildings. They have dropped ceiling and can be used to hide pipes.

Cove ceiling– Elevates gradually. Meets with a flat center.

Barrel Vault Ceiling – Upward arch. The entire length of the room, like a barrel cut in half.
As you can see, there are many types of ceiling!! Hard to choose? You betcha!! If you have the choice of doing something different, then go for it. After all, it’s up to you.

Mixing Patterns

Mixing Patterns!!
When mixing patterns, odd numbers work best. When selecting colors, I generally like to choose colors from big items, such as a sofa, area rug or chair.
Here is some guideline that will help you when choosing patterns:

  • Vary the scale of the patterns. Use large and small-scale patterns.
  • Choose two important colors and one neutral.
  • Use either cool tones or warm, DO NOT  mix the tones.
  • Use the patterns in all three working zones, function zone (furniture area), power zone (mid-area) and ceiling zone.

  • Try to keep 3 patterns. Using too many patterns doesn’t give the eyes a place to rest and will feel chaotic…

The most important rule when mixing patterns is COLOR. Make sure the colors are in the same tone. You also want to show some restraint and NOT go overboard!! A healthy mix is excellent. So go out there and have fun!!

Wallpaper making a comeback!

Wallpaper making a Come-Back!!
Whenever I suggest wallpaper, I can see my client’s expression of dread and even horror!! Why is that?  I’m here to tell you, have no fear. Wallpaper used today is soooo much better than yesteryear! They can add a lot of charm, elegance, and interest in any space. They come in a wide range of materials and styles. 

Here are the latest trends to hit the market.

Floral/Botanicals – Bring nature indoors. This wallpaper will add bursts of colors to any room.

Geometric– They come in different shapes and sizes, creating a more modern look. It can bring versatility and visual interest in any room.
Metallic– Metallic wallpaper can add depth and sparkle while making your space feel incredibly luxurious. It’s one of my personal favorites!!

Brick/Stone/Wood/Natural Effect – This allows you to incorporate natural elements into your space without the expensive construction work.

Bamboo/Grasscloth– Natural material, they add tremendous appeal to any room. Not recommended in the kitchen or bath since they are not cleanable!! They do have antiseptic characteristics so they will not grow moss or germs. Very expensive. Used mostly in bedrooms or dining rooms.

These are just some of the examples of wallpaper that are out there. Get creative and don’t be afraid to add wallpaper to any space in your home. Whatever you decide, do it with flair!!
